According to the World Health Organisation, children need 60 minutes of play with moderate to vigorous activity every day to grow up to a healthy weight. We here at St. Oliver's N.S. actively promote inclusive physical activity throughout the school day.

Lá glas
As March was designated to the strand of dance we decided to have a whole school céilí for Lá glas. Each class was given a dance to learn and practise during P.E and they preformed it in front of the school. The children then preformed An Dreoilín together. Check out our pictures and see how much fun we had!
10@10
Here’s 4th class enjoying a busy break and working out to 10@10
Well done to all the boys and girls who scooted, cycled and walked to school on Friday despite and frost and cold. What a great way to begin the month of February
Active walkway
To encourage active breaks throughout the school day we set up an indoor active walkway. This can also be used during rainy days. Children can skip, hop or jog between handprints and then high 5 them as they pass.

Dance on Fridays

Run around Europe
The children in St.Olivers N.S have taken part in the Run Around Europe initiative. We are trying to run to Paris. As a school we aim to run 1056km in total.
We made it to Paris!! Wooohooo
Infants to 6th class worked hard over the past few months to get active and run to Paris. On the 13th of February we reach our goal! children from each class ran the final lap to celebrate our victory and the whole school cheered them on with their French flags.
60 Minute Challenge
All senior classes in St. Oliver's take part in the 60 minute challenge each term. It allows children to become more aware of the amount of exercise they do daily and the importance of exercising for 60 minutes a day.
Playground Leaders
During lunch 4th, 5th and 6th classes have become playground leaders. Class teachers have helped to train the playground leaders. Each class is taken to the hall and introduced to games suitable to infants. The leaders then play them in groups. They also made up some of their own games to play with the infants. Their job at lunch is to play different games with the junior and senior infants. Both the older and younger children are really enjoying this experience. We are so lucky to have such wonderful leaders in St.Oliver's N.S. Here are some photos
Halloween disco fun
All classes form infants to 6th participated in our Halloween disco. Children had great fun and won lots of prizes.
Lunchtime Football
There is currently a lunchtime football league running between teams in 5th and 6th class. At the beginning of the year when the weather was better, there was football being played on the green area every day.
Active Homework
The school has taken part in the Super Trooper Programme with Laya Healthcare. This initiative promotes active homework and recognises that physical activity is an important part of the day. Each child keeps a diary of the amount of physical exercise they complete at home and in school. It is a fantastic resource to encourage a home-school link for Physical Activity.
Cycle to School
Children from all classes have been cycling to school on Fridays. Well done everyone
World Book Day
At St. Oliver's we love to celebrate World Book Day by dressing up as out favourite characters and having a disco in the hall for each class.
In addition to PE lessons pupils take part in many fun activities to stay active. Our school day is regularly revitalised within the classroom with ‘brain break’ activities such as yoga, dance, aerobics and Zumba thanks to the Go Noodle website, Bizzy Breaks programme and teacher led physical movement breaks. These regular brain breaks boost energy levels fuelling the children’s brains for further learning. These breaks are particularly important on rainy days when we can’t get outside and movement breaks are extended on these days.
We have many initiatives to promote activity throughout the day and school year. These include run around Europe, playground leaders, and having active rewards, such as for line of the week.
Teachers also use activity throughout the curriculum. For example maths trails, nature walks, school tours, Deir O Gradaigh as Gaeilge.
